Energy Saving Tips for Businesses

Our business customers count on us for energy to power every moment of every day and for solutions to power a sustainable tomorrow. We want to encourage you to be energy efficient.

Here are a few tips to help you reduce your electricity use and save money on your electric bills:

  • Get an energy audit.  This will help to determine your baseline energy use and outline ways in which your company can save energy.
  • Educate your employees. Do you know the biggest energy-draining habits in the workplace? These usually involve failing to use power strips, energy-efficient light bulbs, or setting excessively warm or cool thermostat settings.
  • Post business energy-saving tips. Post tips for employees in conspicuous areas around the office. Friendly reminders can be a good nudge in the right direction, especially if they’re about turning off lights or powering down equipment.
  • Encourage energy innovation. Encourage employees to bring innovative energy-saving ideas in the workplace to regular staff meetings, or have some way for them to share anonymously. Based on your staff and the culture of your office, find a way that would be most effective to get everyone on board.
  • Label light switches. Often people will come into the office and switch on every light because no one has really paid any attention to which switch operates which lights. By labelling switches with stick-on labels, it becomes clear which lights can be switched off on sunny days or when no-one is working in that area.
  • Switch off lights. While it may seem like a given, you should encourage employees to turn lights off in rooms that are unoccupied. Most offices have storerooms, photocopier rooms, archive stores and kitchens. Label the switches with “turn off this light” stickers, and get everyone into the habit of switching off when they leave.
  • Blinds up – lights off. Many offices have the blinds shut all day because of early morning glare. If you can, open the blinds, let the sunshine in, and switch off the lights.
  • Shutdown Your Computer. When you go home at night, either switch off or put your computer to sleep (hibernation) and turn off your screen.
  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs. Try replacing any old incandescent light bulbs or compact fluorescent bulbs with LED Lighting.  LED's can help save you as much as 80% on electricity.
  • Upgrade equipment. When employees see the business’s officials investing in energy-efficient appliances, devices and office equipment, they take notice. Making moves like this within the company can cause a workplace culture shift in an energy-efficient direction.
